Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry will continue co-ordinating with its Iranian counterpart to establish the legal frameworks necessary for restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries, a top minister has said.
Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani said Bahrain adopts a balanced approach in its foreign policy, founded on the defence of its sovereignty and independence, the achievement of its national interests, and enhancement of its regional and international standing.
“The Kingdom of Bahrain is committed to the principles of good neighbourliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, focusing on strengthening relationships and establishing co-operation and dialogue through mutual respect and shared understanding,” he said.
Dr Al Zayani explained that he visited Tehran on May 22, 2024, to offer condolences for the passing of the former Iranian president and senior officers in a helicopter crash.
He also pointed out that he participated in the Asia Co-operation Dialogue Conference held in Tehran on June 24, 2024, and attended the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on July 30, 2024.
In addition, Iranian Foreign Minister Dr Abbas Araghchi visited Bahrain on October 21 last year, where he was honoured with an audience with His Majesty King Hamad.
“In my bilateral discussions with my counterpart, Dr Araghchi, we reached a consensus on resuming talks aimed at restoring bilateral relations between the two countries,” noted Dr Al Zayani. “We also reaffirmed our commitment to the fundamental principles of international relations and good neighbourliness, which are essential for regional stability and economic prosperity.”
He further remarked that he observed a genuine interest from the Iranian Foreign Ministry and government in enhancing relations and their readiness to co-operate towards reaching an agreement that would contribute to economic prosperity across the region.
Dr Al Zayani was responding in writing to a question from MP Mamdooh Al Saleh regarding Bahrain’s relations with Iran.
The minister will appear during Tuesday’s weekly Parliament session to respond to any further queries the MP may have.
