Bahrain is now inching closer to becoming a hub of surf tourism as the construction contract has been awarded to Manama-based Poullaides Construction Company (PCC).
The Bahrain Surf Park – Club Hawaii Experience has appointed PCC as the contractor for delivering the innovative leisure project.
This milestone propels the surf park closer to its highly anticipated opening at Bilaj Al Jazayer, a 1.3 million square metre development along Bahrain’s southwest coast.
It is being developed by Edamah, the real estate arm of Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat in partnership with GFH Financial Group (GFH).
The aim is to attract around 300,000 visitors annually to help create significant local opportunities, generating jobs and boosting Bahrain’s economy, which will strengthen its appeal as ‘a hub for adventure tourism’.
“As the developer of Bahrain Surf Park – Club Hawaii Experience, we are proud to support a project that reflects Bahrain’s commitment to innovation and growth,” said Edamah chief executive Khaled Al Majed. “This surf park will strengthen the kingdom’s position as a leading destination for leisure and entertainment while generating jobs. Edamah supports public-private partnerships (PPPs) which are essential for driving economic development and attracting investment.”
GFH Financial Group’s Proprietary Investments managing director Chetan Dongra believes the Bahrain Surf Park – Club Hawaii Experience represents a unique investment opportunity in the kingdom’s thriving tourism and entertainment sector.
“By bringing a world-class attraction to Bahrain, we are not only enhancing the leisure landscape but also creating long-term value for investors, businesses, and the wider economy,” added Mr Dongra.
For his part, PCC founder and managing director Christos A. Poullaides said: “We’re honoured to have been entrusted with the construction of this landmark project.
“We are committed to delivering a state-of-the-art facility that sets a new standard for leisure and tourism in the region.”
The park will feature a variety of leisure and entertainment amenities, such as food and beverages outlets, retail spaces, event areas, cabanas and a private venue for corporate and group bookings.
A major international surfing competition is already planned for 2026, further establishing Bahrain Surf Park as a ‘premier destination’ for global surfing events.
“We are thrilled to be moving forward with this pioneering project that will bring a world-class surfing destination to Bahrain,” said Bahrain Surf Park – Club Hawaii Experience general manager Victoria Williams.
Alongside its world-class wave pool, the park will host the Club Hawaii Surf Academy, offering comprehensive training programmes to develop surfers at every level.
The Surf Park will also feature the first Wavegarden Cove in the region. This advanced technology will generate waves of various sizes and shapes, catering to surfers of all skill levels.
The patented technology allows up to 1,000 perfect waves per hour similar to those in the ocean and can accommodate up to 90 surfers.
With the push of a button on the control system of a Wavegarden Cove, it is possible to adjust the size, shape, power and frequency of the waves, matching them to the requirements of the surfers in the water. In effect, it is possible to instantly go from a small wave for beginners to a powerful two-metre barrel.
The technology offers six wave categories: Bays, Waikiki, Malibu, Turns, Barrels and Airs. Each wave type comes in different sizes and peeling speeds that are essential for the development of surfing skills for learning, cruising, tube riding and aerials, experts say.
The cost of the project has not been revealed but a similar ‘world-class’ surf lake complex that opened in the English city of Bristol, called The Wave, cost around BD13 million to build.
