ITALY’S renowned design prowess took centre stage at a special event hosted by Italian Ambassador Andrea Catalano.
In collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency (ICE), the ambassador’s residence in Saar was transformed into a vibrant showcase for the second annual ‘Made in Italy Day’.
The yearly celebration highlights Italy’s significant impact on various fields, including art, design, technology, fashion and innovation.
The initiative aligns with the Italian government’s focus on boosting exports, with “diplomacy for growth” being a key priority.
The evening paid tribute to iconic Italian figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo Galilei, whose ground-breaking ideas continue to influence the world.
A key highlight was the ‘Career Photography’ exhibition, featuring award-winning designs from the prestigious Compasso d’Oro industrial design competition.
Fashion also played a prominent role, with haute couture creations by Ettore Bilotta on display. Mr Bilotta, who also held a masterclass in Qalat Al Bahrain, shared his expertise on Italian design.
“My first visit to Bahrain has been marked by the opportunity to demonstrate Italian design, where elegance is paramount. This contrasts with my unique dress designs, each one-of-a-kind creation born from a myriad of inspirations,” Mr Bilotta told the GDN.
“Having designed uniforms for airlines like Etihad, Kuwait Airways and Qatar Airways, my approach considered elegance and practicality with a blend of local Arabic culture.”
Complementing his elegant dresses were the exquisite jewellery pieces of Bahraini designer Amal Sanad from Kyan Jewels, who has gained international recognition for her collaborations with Italian designers.
“Inspired by the beauty of Bahrain’s art, nature and culture, my work as a jewellery engineer aims to create sentimental pieces that resonate with both personal meaning and national identity. Winning an award in October, in collaboration with another artist, was a wonderful recognition of this fusion,” Ms Sanad told the GDN.
The craftsmanship of Italy was further showcased through the fine leather goods of the historic company Alfredo Beretta. Even high-tech sporting innovation was on display, with Formula 1 helmets from the Racing Force Group highlighting the blend of Italian expertise and Bahraini manufacturing.
Guests enjoyed delicious offerings from Sitaf, refreshing drinks from Gruppo Distillati, and a special menu crafted by Chef Simona Girelli of Sapori di Toscana, emphasising the quality of the Mediterranean diet.
The event was well-attended by prominent figures, including National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) secretary-general Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, local dignitaries, foreign ambassadors, and key business leaders with ties to Italy.
In his opening speech, Mr Catalano emphasised that ‘Made in Italy Day’ serves as an important platform to highlight the story of Italian quality and innovation.
“Tonight,” the ambassador added, “we tell the story of how Made in Italy maintains its competitiveness through tradition and innovation.”
He highlighted the diverse range of Italian inventions that have shaped modern life, from the telephone to gelato.
Mr Catalano also drew attention to specific examples of Italian design excellence present at the event. He noted the stylish and safe Bell Helmets, manufactured right here in Bahrain, as a testament to the successful partnership of Italian design and local production.
The collaboration between fashion designer Mr Bilotta and Ms Sanad was also lauded, highlighting a beautiful fusion of creativity.
Guests were also treated to the authentic flavours of Italy, thanks to Chef Simona Girelli and Sapori di Toscana, perfectly paired with beverages from Distillati Group and a selection of fine cheeses from Sitaf. Even the iconic Bialetti moka pot, a staple in Italian homes, was presented as an example of timeless Italian design.
