More than 60 people took part in a clean-up at the Al Najma Club Beach in Juffair.
The event was organised by Palakkad Arts and Cultural Theatre (PAACT) as part of May Day celebrations, with the goal of encouraging people in Bahrain to pick up rubbish they see at beaches or on the street … and urging everyone to stop littering in the first place.
The clean-up was inaugurated by Capital Governorate Information and Follow-up director Yusuf Lori, and presided over by PAACT president Ashok Kumar. Its general secretary Sivadas Nair delivered a welcome address.
“We are trying to raise more awareness about the importance of keeping our beaches and country clean,” Mr Kumar told the GDN.
“It is also critical for young people to grasp the need of reducing plastic waste, recycling and reusing more items to protect our marine life and land.
“We plan to hold more beach clean-ups in the future, as well as to plant additional trees to promote green space initiatives and environmentally-friendly practices.”
Leading the beach cleaning activities were PAACT office-bearers Jyothi Menon, Subhash Menon, Salmanul Faris, Jagadheesh Kumar, Ramdas Nair, Satheesh Kumar, Ramesh K T, Deepak Vijayan, Anil Kumar and Sudheer.
Members of the Women’s Wing, including Sajitha Satheesh, Usha Suresh, Sheeba Shashi, and Ramya Gopakumar, also attended
Social workers Satyan Perambra, E V Rajeevan, Anwar Nilambur, Abdul Mansheer and Sharaf Ali Kunj were present to lend support and offer more hands to the mission.
It is estimated that up to 13 million metric tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean each year – the equivalent of a rubbish truckload every minute.
Fish, seabirds, sea turtles and marine mammals can become entangled in or ingest plastic debris, causing suffocation, starvation and drowning.
