A verdict date has been set in the case of a man charged with possession and distribution of drugs, including crystal meth (locally known as shabu) and hashish, in Bahrain.
The 24-year-old Pakistani labourer yesterday admitted in the High Criminal Court to the charges of possession and distribution of shabu, but denied dealing in hashish.
He will learn of his fate on May 13.
On January 30 this year, acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Narcotics Directorate task force arrested the defendant using a dead drop near his place of residence in Gudaibiya.
He was spotted “pacing nervously up and down the area”. After a while, he placed an item in front of a residential building in the area and began taking photos of the site, assumed to be a dead drop – a location used to pass items or information between two individuals in secrecy.
The defendant was arrested and two envelopes filled with crystalline substances, assumed to be about 2.8gms of shabu, was found in his possession.
He also had a transparent plastic bag full of a dark herbal substance, assumed to be about 4.77gms of hashish.
The drugs were seized as evidence, and the suspect was arrested for possession and distribution of illegal substances.
An inspection of his belongings revealed about BD30 in cash, believed to be the proceeds from dealing in drugs.
At the defendant’s place of residence, officers found 14 envelopes of various colours filled with a dark herbal substance, assumed to be about 727.5gms of hashish.
Also found were two weighing scales, about 26 plastic bags of a crystalline substance believed to be about 45.33gms of shabu and a number of unused plastic bags, which were supposed to store the drugs ahead of dead drop transactions.
The defendant’s phone contained conversations and photos of the substances as well as videos. A number of locations across the kingdom were also noted down.
Further investigations revealed that the labourer was part of a larger network of people who dealt in drugs and psychedelic substances in the kingdom.
Upon interrogation, the defendant stated that he would receive the drugs from another source, prepare them by putting them in bags or envelopes and then deliver them to dead drop locations in exchange for money.
