FIVE people have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into Bahrain 3.35kg of marijuana, worth about BD16,750, the Interior Ministry has announced.
The suspects, identified only as Asians, were apprehended following the detention of a passenger who had aroused the suspicions of Customs officers upon his arrival at Bahrain International Airport.
“He was immediately referred to the red channel where a search of his luggage led to the discovery of 3.35kg of a substance suspected to be marijuana, concealed in food containers,” said a statement yesterday.
The drugs were seized and the case was referred to the Anti-Narcotics Directorate at the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science.
Further investigations led to the identification of four other suspects who were then also arrested. The case has been referred to the Public Prosecution.
The directorate emphasised the importance of public co-operation with security and relevant authorities by reporting confidentially any information related to drug trafficking or promotion through the 24/7 hotline, 996, the main operations room, 999, or via email at 966@interior.gov
