A Bahraini, who was critically injured in the Bapco Refining Complex tragedy, died yesterday.
Bapco Energies confirmed the passing of Hossam Ahmed Abouelkher in a statement.
He had been receiving treatment in a hospital intensive care unit but succumbed to his injuries, bringing the death toll to three.
His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Bapco Energies board of directors chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa expressed his deepest condolences to Mr Abouelkher’s family.
He affirmed full support for those affected and highlighted the importance of the ongoing independent investigation to identify the root cause and enhance safety across all operations.
He reiterated that the safety of employees, contractors and the community remains a top priority, as employees are the company’s foundation.
Bapco Energies stated that the incident on Friday occurred at a unit within the Bapco Refining Complex and involved process safety equipment.
Employees Dejan Cuca and Mohamed Mahmood Shehabi were killed instantly.
Bapco Energies extended its deepest condolences to the families and confirmed that full support continues to be provided to all those affected by the tragedy.
It reaffirmed that the incident was swiftly contained, operations remain stable, and an independent investigation is underway to determine the root cause of the May 2 incident.
This was in line with the directives issued by the boards of directors of Bapco Energies and Bapco Refining.
An internal support committee has been established to ensure the smooth and transparent facilitation of the investigation, as reported earlier in the GDN.
The committee will be responsible for enabling full access to all relevant information and materials, co-ordinating with authorities concerned, and ensuring timely communication with all relevant stakeholders.
It will include representation from the ministries of Interior and Oil and Environment, Civil Defence, Bapco Energies, Bapco Refining, along with experts in safety and other technical disciplines.
Following the completion of the investigation, the final report issued by the independent investigation will be shared with all appropriate parties.
