Parliament is set to discuss in its irregular session today the proposed amendments to the Press Law, which include the abolition of custodial penalties in publication-related cases.
They also introduce a new chapter titled ‘Electronic Media’, which regulates the role of digital media by removing prior censorship of content shared on electronic media platforms.
An agreement was previously reached between the Information Ministry and the Services Committee to lift many restrictions on content in the draft law – except for content that targets the official religion or the royal institution in Bahrain, according to our sister paper Akbhar Al Khaleej yesterday.
Bahrain Journalists’ Association chairman Isa Al Shaiji affirmed that the draft law represents a milestone in the history of national journalism and a long-awaited legislative shift.
It also reflects Bahrain’s unwavering commitment to freedom of opinion and expression within the comprehensive development march led by His Majesty King Hamad.
