THE Health Ministry has completed evaluating the canteens at government schools as part of the ‘Food and Beverage Quality Improvement’ project.
The final inspections, in co-ordination with the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and the Education Ministry, took place at Malkiya Primary and Intermediate School for Girls.
The project aims to promote students’ health by improving the quality of school meals through annual training workshops for school canteen contractors and health counsellors organised by the Health Ministry’s Nutrition Section.
These workshops are guided by a nutritional manual that is updated annually based on the latest scientific evidence, as well as local, Gulf and international standards.
Health Ministry’s public health director Dr Mohammed Al Awadhi stressed the importance of contractors adhering to the nutritional guidelines for school canteens.
He noted that inspection teams provide guiding materials and appropriate recommendations during visits to enhance healthy dietary practices, reflecting the project’s success and the sustainability of its oversight and awareness efforts.
Nutrition Section head Dr Buthaina Ajlan pointed to a significant decrease in violations among school canteens.
This, she stated, was due to the effective co-ordination between the Health and Education ministries, as well as the awareness and commitment of canteen contractors to providing safe and healthy food options for students.
