Bahrain’s unrelenting efforts to boost pan-Arab work, strengthen solidarity and co-operation as well as foster peace and security have been stressed.
Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani affirmed that the kingdom’s continuous efforts during its presidency of the 33rd Arab Summit reflected His Majesty King Hamad’s keenness to ensure success of the summit in yielding constructive initiatives aimed at promoting joint Arab action, enhancing solidarity and integration and conveying a message of peace.
Dr Al Zayani was speaking during a meeting at the ministry’s headquarters yesterday with editors-in-chief of local newspapers marking the conclusion of Bahrain’s presidency of the 33rd Arab Summit hosted by Manama on May 16 last year.
The minister underlined the importance given to the Palestinian cause in His Majesty’s inaugural address. He pointed out the King’s emphasis on the suffering of the Palestinian people and denial of their legitimate rights to security, freedom and self-determination.
“His Majesty underscored the need to develop a unified and urgent Arab and international stance based on dialogue and collective solidarity to stop wars and establish a just and lasting peace as the only viable option,” he said.
Dr Al Zayani affirmed the positive response of Arab countries to Bahrain’s initiatives at the Arab Summit, which addressed real issues and proposed solutions to the challenges facing the Arab world.
He said these initiatives included a call to hold an international conference to resolve the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution, and supporting the recognition of the State of Palestine and its full membership in the United Nations.
The initiatives also included the provision of educational and health services for those affected by conflicts in the region, and development of Arab co-operation in the fields of finance technology, innovation and digital transformation.
The Foreign Minister also spoke about the ministry’s preparations for the elections to be held at the United Nations General Assembly in June to select non-permanent member states of the UN Security Council.
He noted that Bahrain is a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the council for the 2026–2027 term.
Dr Al Zayani underlined the need to address pressing issues in various fields, including cybersecurity, maritime security and counter-terrorism.
