We visited Al Kubra Garden in Muharraq last weekend, and despite a few signs of wear and tear, it turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable spot – especially for families with children.
Spread over 90,000sqm, the garden has a lot going for it. The first thing that caught my attention was the constant stream of low-flying airplanes passing overhead. With Bahrain International Airport so close by, it’s an unexpected bonus for aviation enthusiasts and a thrill for children who excitedly point up every few minutes. I found myself doing the same more than once!
The park features a covered exercise area and two playgrounds – one open to the sky and the other completely shaded, which was perfect in the midday heat. The shaded one especially stood out. It’s equipped with unique climbing structures, roundabouts and little playhouses that I haven’t seen in other public parks in Bahrain. The second playground, though unshaded, still offers plenty of space and activity for children to burn off energy.
There are large green areas, plenty of benches and seating zones, and even a one kilometre running loop for those wanting to get in some exercise. I really appreciated the sprinklers that adorned the walkway, it made walking in the heat far more comfortable. There is also ample parking with more than 500 spaces making the visit smooth and hassle-free.
