Bahraini authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 11kg of narcotics into the country, the Interior Ministry announced in a statement last night.
A 20-year-old Asian expatriate has been arrested in connection with the case.
The joint operation between the Interior Ministry’s Anti-Narcotics and Air Ports Customs Directorates seized drugs with an estimated street value of BD64,000, as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public safety and combat drug-related crime.
The Customs officers at Bahrain International Airport initially seized a suspicious postal parcel containing approximately 1.156kg of synthetic cannabis.
The matter was referred to the Anti-Narcotics Directorate, which launched an investigation to trace the intended recipient.
Authorities were able to identify and arrest a 20-year-old Asian expatriate in possession of more than 10kg of additional narcotics.
The General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science confirmed that all legal procedures have been completed, and the case has been referred to the Public Prosecution.
In the statement, the ministry emphasised the importance of continued co-operation between security agencies and the wider community. It reiterated the role of public awareness initiatives such as lectures and exhibitions in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
Authorities urged members of the public to report any suspected drug-related activity by confidentially contacting the hotline (996), the operations room (999), or via email at 996@interior.gov.bh.
