Bahrain continues to step up its efforts to protect the nation’s youth and society from the menace of drugs, stated Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa yesterday.
He was speaking during a meeting hosted by the ministry to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the Officers’ Club in Gudaibiya and attended by ministers, governors and senior officials.
The day was observed globally on June 26 and this year’s campaign, “Break the cycle. #StopOrganisedCrime”, highlighted the need for co-ordinated long-term action to break the cycle of organised crime and drug trafficking – by addressing root causes, investing in prevention and building stronger health, education and social systems.
Gen Shaikh Rashid thanked the Anti-Narcotics Directorate of the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science as well as all relevant security authorities “for their sincere and ongoing efforts to fulfil their security responsibilities in protecting society from narcotics”.
He highlighted the significance of continuing national efforts to tackle drug-related challenges to protect youth and the future of the nation.

“These efforts include the continuation of developing the Interior Ministry’s programmes and initiatives, including the Ma’an (together) programme against violence and addiction, which is being implemented in co-operation with the Education Ministry, as well as the Recovery programme and the alternative sentencing programmes,” he added.
At the event, a film was screened that highlighted national anti-drug efforts, the achievements of the Anti-Narcotics Directorate, awareness projects and efforts to reintegrate recovered people into society.
The minister also honoured personnel from the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science, as well as relevant security authorities, along with the organisers of distinguished programmes in combating and raising awareness of the scourge of drugs, and the supporting national companies and institutions.
The celebration included an exhibition with the participation of ministries, members of the National Anti-Drug Committee and the relevant Interior Ministry directorate.
It featured awareness sections that showcased security and preventive anti-drug efforts.

The GDN reported last month that a special Narcotics Crimes Prosecution was set up to deal with drug-related offences and cases.
It will be responsible for investigating and handling crimes stipulated in Law 15 of 2007, concerning narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, according to Attorney General Dr Ali Al Buainain.
He added that the move was a major milestone as Bahrain steps up its war against drug-related crimes that significantly affect security and public health.
Bahrain has launched the second phase of its drug control plan, building on the 97 per cent success rate of the first phase.
Between January and April 2025, authorities recorded more than 700 drug-related cases and seized more than 182kg of illegal substances.
Meanwhile, the ministry encourages people to report any suspected drug-related activity by calling, in confidence, the hotline (996), the operations room (999), or via email at 996@interior.gov.bh.
