Condolences are pouring in for a Bahrain-born Indian national who died in a tragic motorcycle accident in Spain on Monday night.
The former Bahrain resident, Mervin Thomas Matthew, 27, died after a collision at 9.30pm while riding his motorcycle.
According to Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC) Bahrain chapter country head Sudheer Thirunilath, Mr Matthew’s body is at the police morgue in Tarragona, Spain.
“The investigation is ongoing and the Indian embassy in Spain has been working to get the body repatriated, with the help of the embassy in Bahrain,” Mr Thirunilath added.
Mr Matthew was born in Bahrain in 1997 to father Moni Odikandathil Mathew Thomas, a social worker and government employee, and mother Suja Annamma Mathew.
He studied at the Asian School and Indian School Bahrain, and in 2021, moved to Reus, Spain, on his own to complete aviation training with a dream of becoming a pilot.
“He was born in Bahrain and grew up here with lots of friends,” Mr Moni Mathew Thomas told the GDN.
“We were so proud of the man he became – he was always helping and supporting those around him, even at personal cost.
“My wife and I are so shocked and saddened by this, and we have been trying to understand what happened.
“So far, what we know is that there might have been another vehicle involved, but we are hoping to get the full report soon.
“We are hoping to bring his body back to India, and are working with the embassies to facilitate this process.”
Mr Matthew had visited his parents in Bahrain in the last several years.
Originally from Pullad in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, the family has been based in Bahrain for approximately 40 years.
Mr Matthew also has two sisters – Merlyn and Merin, who are both based in Bangalore, India.
His father is well-known in the Keralite community in Bahrain, having served on the World Malayalee Council, and currently heads several local community projects including the Karunya Welfare Forum.
