A man with a criminal record is on trial for allegedly robbing an elevator maintenance technician while he was on the job.
The 25-year-old Bahraini, residing in East Riffa, is on trial at the High Criminal Court for allegedly stealing from the victim by threatening him with a deadly weapon.
“On the day of the incident, I was working in a building that my company was tasked to maintain,” the 34-year-old Pakistani technician told the Public Prosecution.
“I was servicing an elevator, so I left my personal belongings inside the building and began working on the elevator.
“I saw the defendant messing with his things, then he came to me, brandished a knife, pointed it at me, and asked me to raise my arms.
“He reached into my pocket to take my car keys and phone. He asked for my phone’s PIN, and looked at the gallery app, browsed my emails and WhatsApp.
“He then asked me to face the wall and suddenly ran away using the stairs.”
The alleged victim immediately reported the incident to the police, who arrived at the scene and took him with them in a patrol vehicle to look for the defendant in the building’s vicinity.
The defendant was found and arrested. On his person, he reportedly had the two stolen items, along with a perfume bottle.
A Bahraini policeman, who worked on the case, told prosecutors that he determined the defendant’s identity through the victim’s testimony and with the help of intelligence from police informants.
He also said that he confirmed the suspect’s identity by taking his behaviour into consideration, and by consulting his criminal record.
He was charged with theft through threat of violence, taking the victim’s property by force and stopping his resistance by forceful means.
Judges adjourned the hearing to Sunday, when the defence team is expected to present their requests to the court.
