THREE people – a woman and two men – have been sentenced to prison and fined BD4,000 each after being found guilty of trafficking in two women.
The High Criminal Court sentenced the woman to three years in prison, while the men were sentenced to one year each.
All three will also cover the victims’ repatriation costs. The age and nationalities of the defendants and victims were not disclosed.
According to the case, the Public Prosecution received a complaint from the victims, claiming that the defendants exploited them into forced labour, and were made to work in jobs other than what was agreed upon.
They were made to work long hours without pay, and under conditions that the authorities described as being ‘unsuitable for the nature of the work’. They were reportedly confined to a room and had the doors locked on them.
The victims’ statements were taken and they were placed in a shelter run by the National Committee for Combating Trafficking in Persons.
