A reckless driver, who got behind the wheel while drunk and high, causing a crash that killed a father, mother and child, lost appeal against his jail terms today.
The 29-year-old motorist was sentenced to nine years in prison in two separate trials: one on charges of manslaughter, reckless driving, property damage, speeding, and one for his recreational drug use.
The Bahraini took to the High Criminal Appeals Court to appeal the two rulings, but judges upheld the convictions and sentences in both cases.
In the first trial, the Lower Criminal Court’s seventh circuit (traffic court) sentenced the man to six years in prison for his role in the death of Ahmed Al Orrayedh, 40, Fatima Al Qaidoom, 36, and their son Abdulaziz, seven.
He was convicted on all eight charges, which include vehicular manslaughter and causing grievous physical harm to the late couple’s two surviving children, 12-year-old Aya and nine-year-old Yousif.
The traffic court judge ruled to suspend the appellant’s driving licence for a year after he completes his sentence, and ordered that the vehicle be confiscated.
In the second trial, the Bahraini was found guilty of possessing hashish for personal use, and was sentenced to three years in prison and fined BD3,000 by the Lower Criminal Court’s first circuit.
