2024 was another year of advancement for Bahrain’s partnership with the United Nations, a top UN official has said. UN agencies’ strategic co-operation with the government of Bahrain, civil society and the private sector reflects the kingdom’s firm commitment to sustainable and inclusive development, UN Resident Co-ordinator Khaled Al Mekwad said.
“Through these partnerships, we see tangible outcomes that demonstrate Bahrain’s dedication to advancing sustainable and inclusive development,” he said.
Mr Al Mekwad made the remarks a day after the UN in Bahrain issued its annual Country Results Report for 2024, reviewing a year of co-operation, innovation and progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He stressed that the report was more than a record of joint achievements.
“It reflects shared objectives and shows how the UN system continues to support Bahrain’s Vision 2030 and its national development priorities.
“Together, we have moved significantly towards a cleaner environment, more sustainable energy, a stronger economy, better healthcare, more peaceful and productive relations with other countries, and higher-quality education.
“We have also addressed key global issues such as justice, effective governance and human rights, while engaging with emerging topics like artificial intelligence and its impact on society,” he added.
The report also reviewed Bahrain’s progress in the regional and global context, underlining its ambitious goals within its Economic Vision 2030. It noted that Bahrain has made substantial progress towards its SDG commitments in 2024, while also preparing long-term plans to achieve its Vision 2050. This includes strengthening key sectors such as ICT, telecommunications, trade, financial services and public administration.
The report further highlighted the collective achievements of the UN system in Bahrain across priority areas, including strengthening national policies on climate change, sustainable and healthy cities, and the green transition. It also emphasised the importance of advancing youth participation, empowering women, and enhancing public services as part of this joint effort.
