A thieving thug has been found guilty of robbing a lift maintenance man at knifepoint, stealing his phone, car keys and a perfume bottle.
The High Criminal Court sentenced the Bahraini labourer to three years in prison and ruled to confiscate his pocket knife. The 25-year-old from East Riffa was convicted on charges of theft by threatening the victim with a deadly weapon and taking his property by force.
The victim, a Pakistani expatriate, earlier told the Public Prosecution that he had been working inside a building that his company was under contract to maintain.
“I was servicing an elevator, so I left my personal belongings nearby inside the building, and began working on it,” the 34-year-old terrified technician testified. “I saw the defendant messing with his things, then he came to me, brandished a knife, pointed it at me, and asked me to raise my arms.
“Then, he reached into my pocket to take my car keys and phone. He asked for my phone’s PIN, and then looked at the gallery app, browsed my emails and WhatsApp. He then asked me to face the wall, and suddenly ran away using the stairs.”
The victim immediately reported what had happened to the police, using his spare phone.
Officers quickly arrived at the scene and took him with them in their patrol car to look for the defendant around the building’s vicinity.
The robber was found and arrested when the maintenance technician spotted him. He still had the stolen items on his person when arrested, the court heard.
