Two men have been referred to trial for allegedly sexually exploiting a 16-year-old girl by tricking her into sending nude photos of herself under the false pretence of marriage.
The suspects, whose nationalities and ages were not disclosed, reportedly communicated with the victim on social media, according to the Child Protection in Cyberspace Unit.
The Public Prosecution launched an investigation upon receiving a report on the matter, said a statement yesterday.
The girl’s testimony was heard and the two men were questioned. After being confronted with the evidence, the suspects confessed to the charges.
The two defendants were referred to the Lower Criminal Court for trial, with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the authorities emphasised the importance of raising awareness among young girls against being misled by false promises or ambiguous language that could make them vulnerable to various kinds of exploitation.
Parents were also urged to continuously supervise their children and monitor their social media activities to protect them and keep them away from deviant behaviours.
