A fire broke out in the event hall of a ma’atam in A’ali last night, as a celebration of the birth of Prophet Mohammed was being held. No injuries were reported.
Civil Defence firemen put out the blaze at Haji Ahmed Mansoor Al A’ali Ma’atam, as the commemoration continued unabated in the main part of the building.
A ma’atam administrator told the GDN that the fire broke out in the hall where attendees eat meals after the event.
“The fire was likely caused by an electric short-circuit,” board member Aqeel Al A’ali, who also serves as chairman of A’ali Social Charity Society, stated.
“Some tables, chairs and sofas were damaged, but firemen put out the blaze quickly. I’m not aware of the full details, since it was dark. The full image will be clearer in the morning."
“No one was in the hall, as the celebrations were ongoing and it wasn’t time for the meal yet. The post-celebration meal was served in the ma’atam’s courtyard instead.”
The Interior Ministry stated that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
