The Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (Asry) has launched the world's largest solar energy project in the ship-repair and shipbuilding sector, a significant step toward Bahrain's sustainability goals.
His Majesty King Hamad's Representative for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs and Bapco Energies Chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa attended the launch.
He affirmed that the project reflects the vision of His Majesty the King to build a future based on sustainability and innovation, and is supported by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
Shaikh Nasser stated that the project solidifies Bahrain's position as a leader in renewable energy and green innovation. "This project demonstrates the ability of national institutions to adopt innovative ideas and transform them into practical initiatives that protect the environment and ensure a brighter future for our coming generations," he said.
The project, a partnership with Kanoo CleanMax Renewables, aims to boost Asry's energy efficiency and cut operating costs.
Asry chairman Ayman bin Tawfeeq Almoayed called the initiative an "environmental and strategic investment" that reinforces the company's commitment to supporting the national net-zero carbon neutrality goal.
Asry chief executive Dr Ahmed Al Abri highlighted the project's scale, noting that the first phase will have a capacity of 22.5 megawatts, with an output exceeding 36 million kilowatt-hours per year. A second phase will add another 22 megawatts, bringing the total capacity to 44.5 megawatts and a combined output of over 71 million kilowatt-hours annually. This is expected to deliver yearly savings of more than $2m.
