HIS Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Bapco Energies chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa affirmed that the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company’s (Asry) solar energy project embodies the vision of His Majesty for progress and prosperity.
He noted that the initiative translates the directives to build a future based on sustainability and innovation.
Shaikh Nasser said the project receives continuous support from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for pioneering environmental initiatives and the transition to clean energy.
This came as Shaikh Nasser attended the launch of Asry’s solar energy project, the largest of its kind in the world within the ship repair and shipbuilding sector. The project is a partnership with Kanoo CleanMax Renewables and was attended by a number of ministers and senior officials.
Shaikh Nasser stated that the project affirms Bahrain’s status among the leading countries in applying advanced renewable energy technologies. He added that it showcases the kingdom’s efforts to create a sustainable working environment that encourages innovation and strengthens the green economy.
He expressed his pride and appreciation for the project, which demonstrates the ability of national institutions to adopt innovative ideas and transform them into practical initiatives that promote resource sustainability and protect the environment to ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
Asry chairman Ayman Almoayed said the project is an environmental and strategic investment that signals Asry’s firm resolve to support national efforts to achieve net-zero carbon neutrality and promote energy efficiency.
He added that the project reflects the company’s vision of combining its leadership in the industrial marine services sector with green innovation. This, he said, reinforces its role as a responsible company in environmental and economic terms, helping to cement Bahrain’s global standing and support its path towards sustainability.
Asry chief executive Dr Ahmed Al Abri said: “At Asry we believe environmental responsibility is an integral part of our corporate strategy, and based on this, we are keen to launch practical initiatives that support the green transition adopted by Bahrain.”
He added that the total capacity of the solar power plant is 22.5 megawatts in its first phase, with a further 22 megawatts planned for the second phase. The output is expected to exceed 36 million kilowatt-hours per year in the first phase and more than 71 million kilowatt-hours per year after both phases are completed. This will deliver yearly savings of more than $2m and improve energy use and cut operating costs.
Kanoo CleanMax is a joint venture between Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo (YBA Kanoo) and CleanMax Solar MENA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions.
Ali Abdulla Kanoo, chairman of Kanoo Industrial and Energy, a part of YBA Kanoo, said: “Our partnership with Asry stands as an affirmation of the trust placed in Kanoo CleanMax’s renewable energy expertise. This underscores our commitment to implementing renewable solutions and enabling industries to reduce carbon emissions.”
CleanMax chairman and managing director Kuldeep Jain added: “We are glad to collaborate on this solar project with Asry. We are proud to bring our expertise to Bahrain, delivering impactful solar solutions that enable industries to lead sustainably, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute meaningfully to the kingdom’s clean energy vision.”
The project reinforces Asry’s position as a leading maritime hub in the region and a national institution that helps build a more sustainable future for the next generations, in line with the kingdom’s aspirations for a sustainable green economy.
