A man, described as a Gulf national, has been sentenced to six months in prison for smuggling Indian paan (betel leaf) into Bahrain.
The Lower Criminal Court yesterday ordered the confiscation of the goods and his deportation from the kingdom upon completion of his sentence.
According to court documents, the defendant was apprehended at King Fahad Causeway while attempting to smuggle around 230kg of the banned substance, concealed in 29 packages in the boot of a vehicle.
He was referred to the Public Prosecution, which launched an investigation.
Experts were commissioned to examine the contraband and review related documents.
The suspect was referred to the Lower Criminal Court which found him guilty of smuggling.
