A man who carjacked a vehicle driven by his rival has been found guilty of assault and theft by force, along with two friends who aided him.
The court heard that the Indian defendant was owed money by the victim – another Indian man – who works as a chauffeur, and so he devised an elaborate plan to steal the car.
After stalking him while he ran errands, the trio managed to intercept the victim’s car, a Mazda owned by his employer, at a traffic light in Adliya. They entered the car and pushed him out and drove off towards Al Sayah district.
The Indian and two Bahraini suspects were sentenced to a year in prison each by the High Criminal Court. Judges also ruled to deport the expat after completing his sentence.
“The two Indians – the second defendant and the victim – were involved in a financial dispute,” read the verdict.
“The defendant called the 33-year-old Bahraini to his aid, who in turn brought along the 35-year-old.
“They met outside the gym he worked at, and he asked them to help him rob the victim.
“They got in the first defendant’s car (33-year-old) and went to Tubli, where they saw the victim, then followed him to Isa Town, then back to Tubli, where he was dropping off a passenger.
“They continued following him. The first defendant, the driver, exchanged seats with the third defendant (35-year-old), who now took charge of the former’s car.
“When they got to Shaikh Hamad Road, the Indian and the first Bahraini defendant got out at a traffic signal, wearing black medical masks, and ambushed the victim.”
A struggle ensued and the Indian victim was pushed out of his employer’s Mazda and onto the street.
The defendants reportedly drove away with the vehicle which contained two phones, BD500 in cash and a wallet that had a bank card in it.
According to a policeman who was involved in the investigation, the perpetrators were tracked and identified through security cameras which monitor roads, and through secret sources.
The court heard that the car was eventually parked in Al Sayah district in Muharraq, and the 33-year-old defendant admitted to making off with it.
He also told the Public Prosecution that his Indian friend stole the victim’s phone.
Meanwhile, the third defendant denied active involvement in the incident, and testified to seeing his two co-defendants fight with the Indian driver.
The three were convicted of stealing a vehicle and the victim’s possessions through force, assaulting him on a public road, and fleeing with the booty.
