Bahrain's journalists and media personnel were honoured for their contribution and coverage in a ceremony at the National Assembly Complex in Gudaibiya yesterday.
Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam affirmed the central role that Bahraini media plays in the national development journey, describing the Press as a ‘strategic partner in parliamentary work’ and a ‘cornerstone of Bahrain’s comprehensive development under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad’.
“Bahraini journalism is more than a profession; it is a national responsibility,” he said.
“It contributes to shaping public awareness, reflecting the people’s voice and supporting democratic values with professionalism, objectivity and credibility.”
The event brought together editors and correspondents from leading newspapers, TV channels, radio stations and digital platforms.
The ceremony was also attended by senior parliamentary figures including First Deputy Speaker Abdulnabi Salman, Second Deputy Speaker Ahmed Qarata and senior officials.
Mr Al Musallam underscored the royal support extended to the media sector, commending His Majesty for fostering an environment of Press freedom, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for his unwavering backing of media development.
“This support from the highest levels of leadership enables our media institutions to thrive in freedom, express opinions responsibly, and adapt to technological advancements,” he noted.
He further praised the media for its pivotal role in covering parliamentary sessions and activities, ensuring transparency and connecting the public with the legislative process:
“The Press serves as a mirror to society; it reflects the people’s concerns and helps us in the legislature remain closely connected to the public’s pulse.”
Highlighting recent legislative progress, Mr Al Musallam noted Parliament’s approval of the Draft Law on Journalism, achieved through close co-ordination.
“This draft law reflects our shared commitment to advancing media rights while maintaining national values. It was the product of open dialogue and continuous co-operation with media professionals.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming fourth legislative session, the Speaker stressed Parliament’s determination to maintain strong co-operation with the government, the Shura Council and civil institutions to meet national aspirations.
He directed members of parliament and the parliamentary secretariat to uphold an ‘open-door policy’ with the media, promoting a culture of transparency, accountability and trust.
“We are committed to engaging with the media openly and regularly – our doors are always open. The media is a vital bridge between Parliament the people.”
Media representatives attending the ceremony expressed sincere appreciation to Mr Al Musallam for his continued support of Bahrain’s media community. They praised the inclusive approach of Parliament and reaffirmed their commitment to working alongside the legislative body as part of ‘Team Bahrain’, upholding the nation’s democratic image and highlighting its developmental achievements.
