The Ministry of Health, in coordination with the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), conducted a field assessment of core capacities for implementing the International Health Regulations (IHR) at Bahrain International Airport (BIA).
The assessment was carried out in cooperation with Bahrain Airport Company and relevant port authorities, with the participation of representatives from the GCC Committee for IHR Implementation and Bahrain’s IHR team, to enhance the airport’s readiness to respond to health risks at border points.
BIA successfully passed the core capacity risk assessment for border entry points, earning a high rating that reflects the quality and efficiency of its services, as well as ongoing efforts to strengthen national health security and ensure compliance with World Health Organisation (WHO) requirements.
The evaluation team relied on WHO standard tools for data collection and analysis, in addition to field visits, group discussions, and interviews with relevant teams to assess coordination under various conditions and response readiness for public health emergencies.
The achievement highlights Bahrain’s commitment to the highest standards of public health and safety at border points, while reinforcing regional cooperation within the GCC to protect public health and strengthen health security.
