The Shura Council’s unanimous approval of amendments to the Press, Printing and Publishing Law marks a significant step that emphasises the constitutional value of freedom of opinion and expression in Bahrain, Information Minister Dr Ramzan Al Nuaimi has said.
The move reflects ongoing legislative development and efforts to support the national media sector, he added.
His comments follow the upper chamber of the National Assembly approving the amended law earlier in the day.
The minister expressed his appreciation to His Majesty King Hamad for his continuous support for Bahrain’s media landscape, describing royal support as central to the sector’s progress.
He noted that His Majesty’s address at the opening of the new legislative term outlined a clear vision for advancing modernisation, reinforcing the rule of law and upholding responsible expression grounded in national values.
Dr Al Nuaimi also extended gratitude to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for his backing of the media sector and his directives to strengthen co-ordination between the government and the legislature.
He noted that this partnership continues to serve the national interest and drive institutional development.
He said that the amendments include the removal of custodial penalties in publishing cases, replacing them with fines, and the introduction of a regulatory framework for digital media, recognising its role in today’s media environment.
The reforms also reinforce legal and professional guarantees for journalists, promoting a balanced approach that supports freedom of expression while ensuring professional responsibility, and enabling a more open and modern media space.
