Three expatriates allegedly ganged up on a man and assaulted him with a screwdriver and hammer – miraculously leaving him with only bruises rather than fatal injuries.
A Sudanese worker was accused of kidnapping a Nigerian man, and stealing multiple mobile phones from him, and holding them for a BD30 ransom.
The High Criminal Court accused the 40-year-old, and two unidentified friends, of theft by force, having rendered the alleged victim unable to resist the attack or defend his possessions.
“I was at home when I received a call from a person who was demanding money from me,” the 24-year-old Nigerian, who works at a car wash, earlier testified.
“He came outside my residence at midnight, and was in a car with two other men, and told me to come downstairs.
“The defendant wanted me to pay him because he claimed that he’s the reason I got hired at my workplace.
“I told him that I was hired through my own efforts, without receiving help from anyone, but he insisted that I give him BD30.
“So, I called the owner of the car wash, telling him that I needed money as an emergency, and he said that he’d give cash at work tomorrow.”
After not getting the response they were hoping for, the defendant allegedly hit the Nigerian, while his associates assaulted him with a hammer below his eye. They also attacked his shoulders and legs with a screwdriver.
He added that the Sudanese man gave him a paper with his phone number, and told him to reach out when he gets the amount that was asked for. They then ejected him out of the car.
“He said he’ll give me my mobile back if I sent the money,” the victim said.
The victim’s Bahraini employer testified to the Public Prosecution that the Nigerian came to work the next day with a black eye, and when he asked him what happened, he recounted the incident.
They went to the police station to report what had occurred on that night in August, and gave policemen the number, which appeared to be registered under the suspect’s name.
Despite the furious attacks, a medical report stated that the injuries took three weeks or less to heal, which according to the law is a temporary injury.
The hearing has been adjourned to November 9.
