THE winners of Bahrain’s very first Rookie Junior Beach Lifesaving Championship have officially been announced.
More than 70 children from the Royal Life Saving Bahrain (RLSB) Rookie Junior Beach Lifesaving Club recently took part in the event which was held at Sama Bay, Galali.
The championship featured five core challenges aimed at testing a range of skills and abilities, while teaching the children important water safety skills.
“This was the first time that a competition of this sort has ever taken place in Bahrain,” RLSB general manager Sam Rahman told the GDN.
“We’re very excited to see more children become involved in rookie lifesaving, but also lifesaving sport, which is a new programme we are now offering for children to compete in, both nationally and regionally.
“We have also set a goal to create a team to represent Bahrain at the Lifesaving World Championships set to take place in South Africa next November.”
These championships showcase the highest level of lifesaving sport, featuring competitions for national teams and clubs across different age groups.
Bahrain’s star lifesaving performers were:
Under-8s, Saanvi Radia and Nathanael Genty-Franco
Under-10s, Violet Oversier and Hugo Franco
Under-12s, Poppy George and Harrison Syson
Under-14s, Evie MacKenzie and Alex Grieve
U18s, Sabian Williams
Set up in 2021, the RLSB Rookie Junior Beach Lifesaving Club is a nine-week termly programme in Bahrain for children aged five to 16 teaching water safety, lifesaving skills, first aid, team building and leadership through weekly sessions at Budaiya Beach and other locations.
