DHL Express announced plans to invest $85.1 million to build its first regional aircraft maintenance hangar at Bahrain International Airport, solidifying the kingdom’s position as a key aviation and logistics hub.
The facility marks one of DHL’s largest aviation infrastructure investments in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena). Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2026 and the hangar is slated to go live by August 2028.
The 33,850-square-metre development will feature a 9,800sqm hangar capable of handling line maintenance for DHL’s global fleet of Boeing 777 and 767 aircraft, according to a statement from the company.
Once operational, the hub will consolidate DHL’s Mena Aviation team, encompassing management, maintenance, and operations, into one unified location.
The project aligns with DHL’s sustainability goals; the hangar will incorporate solar panels designed to generate up to 40 per cent of its power consumption.
“This investment will significantly strengthen our ability to manage the growing scale and complexity of DHL’s expanding air operations across Mena,” said DHL Express Mena chief executive officer Abdulaziz Busbate. “By centralising maintenance... we will achieve new operational synergies while reducing maintenance-related emissions.”
The new facility will also rationalise DHL’s global maintenance network by providing additional capacity for its international fleet, optimising inventory, and reducing turnaround times, added Richard Gale, vice-president of aviation at DHL Express Mena.
