Preserving Muharraq’s historic and cultural identity is a top priority, Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa has said.
This is in line with the directives of His Majesty King Hamad and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, he said during a visit to inspect the progress of the Muharraq City Development Project.
The development works reflect the government’s commitment, under the leadership of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to preserving the city’s heritage, upgrading its infrastructure and services, and turning its historical legacy into a sustainable cultural and economic asset, Shaikh Khalid said.
This approach positions Muharraq as a model of balanced development that supports modernisation while protecting the kingdom’s urban heritage, he said.
During the visit, the Deputy Prime Minister was briefed by Works Minister Ibrahim Al Hawaj on the development of Shaikh Abdulla Avenue and Shaikh Isa Avenue, which include upgrades to infrastructure services and façades in alignment with the Isa Al Kabeer Palace Project. The completion rate has reached 37 per cent.
Housing and Urban Planning Minister Amna Al Romaihi discussed the under-construction Visitors Centre.
She explained that it will serve as a platform to present and document the project’s vision and main phases.
It will also include offices to receive applications and enquiries related to the project, raise awareness of the importance of preserving the city’s historical and cultural identity, facilitate procedures and enhance communication between property owners and relevant entities, the minister said. The completion rate currently stands at 65pc.
The Deputy Prime Minister also reviewed progress in the first phase of the housing units project at Freej Seyadi and Freej Bin Hindi.
