MPs have urged the government to calculate applicants’ eligibility for government housing based on their monthly income at the time of application, rather than at the time of receiving the housing nomination card.
The proposal, by five MPs led by Bader Al Tamimi, aims to protect low-income households from being disqualified due to income changes over time.
The Housing and Urban Planning Ministry emphasised that current regulations set a maximum income of BD900 at the time of application and BD1,200 when receiving the nomination certificate. The ministry argued that adopting the proposed change could allow some higher-income applicants to qualify, potentially affecting the principle of assisting low-income citizens, as defined in the Constitution.
