Parliament’s weekly session was abruptly cut short today after attendance fell below the required quorum, forcing Acting Speaker Abdulnabi Salman to halt proceedings.
The session was already under time pressure after Mr Salman urged MPs to avoid commenting on urgent proposals, warning that extended interventions would trigger a mandatory 45-minute break for noon (Dohr) prayers. Parliament and Shura Council Affairs Minister Ghanim Al Buainain reminded members that parliamentary bylaws require a prayer break, noting prayers had already been delayed by more than 90 minutes and stressing adherence to procedural rules.
To speed up the session, Mr Salman announced that no MP would be allowed to take the floor. However, moments later, the quorum unexpectedly dropped from 21 MPs to 20 - one short of the legal minimum - prompting the Acting Speaker to gavel the meeting to an immediate close.
