A concerned father checked CCTV footage after finding scratches on his special needs son’s hand and his carer will now face a criminal trial over incidents of alleged abuse.
A woman, described as an Arab national by the authorities, has been placed in provisional detention for allegedly assaulting a child with special needs ‘dozens of times, over several days’ while he sat quietly in the classroom alongside other students with disabilities and learning difficulties.
The Public Prosecution stated that it received a complaint filed by the boy’s father at Samaheej Police Station, in the Muharraq Governorate Police Directorate, after he had visited the private early-intervention centre and reviewed security camera footage.
An investigation was launched and the authorities reviewed letters from the Social Development Ministry which stated that judicial officers had observed violations at the centre, in addition to alleged repeated assaults by a staff member on students.
They confronted the defendant with the evidence and interviewed her. She has been placed in provisional detention and the case has been referred for trial.
The authorities stressed the importance of protecting children, especially those with special needs and learning difficulties, and urged all education providers to adhere to the necessary requirements regarding care and attention that the students need.
The Public Prosecution stated that it would not hesitate to apply the law in such cases and reiterated its resolve to safeguard children’s interests and protect them.
