Nearly 200 falconers participated in a preparatory championship held as part of the 11th Nasser Bin Hamad Season for Falcons and Hunting.
Spanning six rounds, the event served as a key prelude to the upcoming season, which will feature competitions within the kingdom as well as championships across the GCC.
Organised by the Inherited Traditional Sports Committee (Mawrooth), the championship comes as part of efforts to enhance Bahrain’s presence in regional heritage sports.
The event was held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad’s representative for humanitarian work and youth affairs and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Nasser Bin Hamad Season for Falcons and Hunting president and Mawrooth board member and falconry committee chairman Mohammed Al Marri affirmed that Shaikh Nasser’s support has had a decisive impact on elevating the season’s standard and developing its competitions year after year.
“Shaikh Nasser established a pioneering model in preserving national heritage, safeguarding traditional sports and strengthening their place within Bahraini society,” said Mr Al Marri.
“The preparatory championship represents a key stage in raising the falconers’ readiness ahead of the main rounds awaiting them in the current season.
“It is aimed at expanding the number of participants and honing the skills of young people across the various categories of falconry, contributing to opening new horizons for heritage sports and raising the level of competition within them.”
Winners of the preparatory championship have been honoured, but the organisers have yet to disclose their names.
The current season features several events, including falconry competitions, traditional Arabian horse races and camel races with human riders.
The Mawrooth School will also return to instill in the younger generation the values of authenticity and heritage preservation. This initiative reflects Bahrain’s commitment to reviving Arab traditions and strengthening its role in fostering community awareness.
The Nasser Bin Hamad Season for Falcons and Hunting kicked off on December 3 and will run until February 2026. It will bring together participants from within Bahrain and across the GCC and unify them in the spirit of competition.
Last year’s edition saw 80 falconers from Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait vying for top honours.
