Bahrain has affirmed its support for the good offices and efforts undertaken by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, aimed at promoting security and stability in Yemen.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday that the kingdom called upon all Yemeni parties and factions to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise dialogue and peaceful solutions.
It further urged them to refrain from any actions that could undermine security and stability, and to work collectively towards restoring peace and security, safeguarding the interests of the Yemeni people, and achieving lasting security, stability, development and peace in Yemen.
The UAE’s foreign ministry said, “The UAE welcomes Saudi Arabian efforts to support security and stability in Yemen and remains committed to backing stability in the country.”
Yemen’s main southern separatist group, the Southern Transitional Council (STC), has pushed the Saudi-backed, internationally recognised government from its headquarters in Aden while claiming broad control across the south earlier this month.
“The UAE reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to supporting all endeavours aimed at strengthening stability and development in Yemen,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Saudi Arabia said on Thursday it remains hopeful that STC will end an escalation and withdraw its forces from the eastern provinces of Hadramout and Mahra.
A joint Saudi-Emirati military delegation arrived in Aden on December 12 to discuss measures aimed at defusing tensions.
Saudi Arabia said the teams were sent to make “the necessary arrangements” to ensure the return of STC forces to their previous positions outside the two provinces, adding that the efforts were still in progress.
Lebanon’s president yesterday praised Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to reduce escalation in Yemen and promote stability in the conflict-ravaged country.
President Joseph Aoun expressed appreciation for the kingdom’s role in prioritising unity, dialogue and political solutions aimed at preserving Yemen’s sovereignty, unity and social fabric.
“These efforts reflect a responsible regional approach that elevates political settlements, avoids escalation, and seeks to alleviate the humanitarian and security burdens faced by the brotherly Yemeni people,” Aoun said in remarks posted on X.
Aoun also commended Saudi Arabia for its co-ordination with regional and international partners in support of peace efforts in Yemen.
Later in the day, Syria issued a similar statement, voicing full support for Saudi Arabia’s efforts in Yemen. Damascus called on all parties to exercise restraint and reaffirmed its backing of the Yemeni government.
Oman, Egypt and Jordan all released statements in support of the Yemeni government and efforts to de-escalate.
Meanwhile, the internationally recognised government of Yemen yesterday made a public call for the Saudi-led coalition for military support to protect civilians and enforce calm in the country.
Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) President Rashad Al Alimi asked the Coalition Supporting Legitimacy, which is headed by Saudi Arabia, for “military measures” to protect civilians in Yemen.
The request followed an emergency meeting of the National Defence Council, which focused on the situation in Hadramout and Al Mahra.
