Data linked to the world’s 100 largest cities by population shows that 38 of them occupy regions of extremely high water stress, according to new data from Watershed Investigations.
The not-for-profit group which specialises in highlighting threats to global water supplies from climate change, pollution and misuse, has published a map which highlights our planet’s water storage trends coupled with regions experiencing high levels of water stress – that is to say, areas where water withdrawals for public and industry supply are close to exceeding available resources.
Approximately one billion people live in major metropolitan areas located in regions experiencing strong long-term drying, while about 100 million people occupy cities in regions showing a stronger wetting trend.
