Bahrain’s transportation authorities are exploring the possibility of introducing electric public buses as a way to further reduce and offset the kingdom’s carbon footprint.
This was revealed to the GDN on the sidelines of the fourth edition of the Sustainability Forum Middle East (SFME), after the Telecommunications and Transportation Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with carbon-offsetting platform Safa, which is part of the Mumtalakat portfolio of companies.
“We’re tracking as many initiatives as possible and aim to expand them through seasonal events and improvements in transportation, including shifting to electric or green buses over time,” the ministry’s public transportation chief Muneera Albuainain told the GDN.
“For now, we don’t have a specific timeline for electric buses, but we’re working toward making the transition simple and effective.”
