A high-level delegation from Italy, led by Ambassador Andrea Catalano, visited the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) - Medical University of Bahrain to discuss students exchange programme, among other topics.
Present was Rector’s Delegate for International Co-operation and Professor of Endocrinology at the Palermo University in Italy and Central European Diabetes Association president Professor Manfredi Rizzo, who was welcomed on the campus by RCSI - Medical University Bahrain’s president Professor Sameer Otoom.
The delegation was provided an overview of the university’s history and mission. The members were also briefed about the success of three Italian graduates who completed their studies at the university in Busaiteen.
“We are delighted to welcome Andrea Catalano and our distinguished colleague, Prof Manfredi Rizzo, from the Italian Republic,” added Mr Otoom.
“This visit represents an important step in strengthening our international partnerships and creating meaningful opportunities for our students and staff through collaborative initiatives.”
Further discussions were held on the development of a Summer School Elective at the Palermo University starting in September 2026.
The proposed two-week programme will be open to nursing and medical students, combining research activities at the Palermo University with clinical observerships across eight departments at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre in Palermo.
“This collaboration reflects our shared vision for academic and research excellence and international engagement,” added Mr Rizzo.
“We look forward to welcoming students and staff from RCSI - Medical University of Bahrain to Palermo and building a sustainable partnership for the future.”
Mr Catalano expressed his support for a student exchange programme between RCSI Medical University of Bahrain and the Palermo University, demonstrating a shared commitment to advancing collaboration between universities in Bahrain and Italy.
