Tributes are pouring in for a former Bahrain resident – affectionately known as ‘TickāTock’ among his friends due to his passion for watches – who has passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
Trevor Squire, who lived in the kingdom for almost four decades, died peacefully at his home aged 73 in Cornwall, UK, on January 24, surrounded by his family.
He fought his illness with remarkable optimism and dignity until the very end, and is survived by his wife Janet, children Jay and Sam and grandchildren Jaz, Archie and Henry.
Janet Squire, who is currently residing in Cornwall, told the GDN that her husband loved Bahrain deeply and was proud to call it home for nearly 40 years. She added that the memories he made in the kingdom will forever remain in their family’s heart.
“He was such a positive person who loved life. He was the kindest man you could meet, and would literally do anything for anyone,” she said.
“He loved his life in Bahrain, he considered the country to be his home and he really loved the people and the friends he made during his time there.”
Mr Squire came to Bahrain in 1986 as a contract manager for Hafeera Contracting Company. He also worked for the Nass Group and M&I Construction as a general manager.
A lifelong Formula 1 enthusiast, he especially enjoyed his time working at the Bahrain International Circuit.
He was also a member of the Bahrain Yacht Club, where he spent many happy years in the company of close friends.
A devoted lover of cars, music and particularly watches, he became well known for his passion for timepieces – earning him the affectionate nickname.
“His love of watches started at an early age and developed into a lifelong hobby. He built some great relationships with many of the watch dealers on the island.”
Mr Squire ended up spending his final decade in the kingdom working for Tatweer Petroleum (now part of the Bapco Energies Group).
In July 2023, he left the kingdom to retire in his Cornish hometown of Bude, where he enjoyed gardening and walking along the cliffs.
“Although he loved Bahrain with all his heart, he equally loved his Cornish roots and was so thankful to enjoy some time back in the UK after he retired,” said Mrs Squire.
The family always kept a house there but he didn’t manage to fully enjoy it until his final years.
“We’re grateful that he was able to enjoy his last two years in his hometown, spending quality time with his grandchildren.”
