World-renowned circus company Cirque du Soleil is bringing ‘Corteo’ – one of its longest-running and most beloved touring shows – to Bahrain for the first time next month.
The celebrated show, renowned for its gravity-defying acrobatics, striking visual artistry and emotionally rich storytelling, promises to bring a new level of theatrical wonder to the kingdom.
It will be staged at Exhibition World Bahrain from March 22 to 28.
The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) yesterday announced the show as part of Eid Al Fitr celebrations, in collaboration with Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre.
Bahrain has been selected as the first destination of Cirque du Soleil’s Gulf tour of the show.
“Corteo offers a fun and absorbing experience for the whole family, which we are happy to add to our entertainment calendar,” said BTEA chief executive Sara Buhiji.
“Attracting a production of this global calibre underscores our continued commitment to advancing the objectives of Bahrain’s Tourism Strategy 2022-2026, and highlights our strategic partnership with Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre.
“Bringing such high-profile international events to Bahrain helps strengthen its position as a premier hub for cultural and entertainment experiences in the region.”
Beyon Al Dana Amphitheatre chief executive Damian Bush said Corteo by Cirque du Soleil is a ‘production that blurs the line between dream and reality’.
“We are proud to be part of the journey that brings this masterful performance to Bahraini audiences for the first time,” he added.
“We believe in elevating the region’s live entertainment offerings by introducing immersive, globally acclaimed experiences that connect with audiences at a deeper, emotional level. This collaboration with Cirque du Soleil and BTEA exemplifies our shared ambition to position the kingdom as a destination of choice for world-class productions.”
Corteo, the Italian word for ‘cortege’, is by definition a funeral procession. In the production, clown Mauro pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere. It brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.
It also highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us.
