Bahraini youth could benefit from enhanced housing support under a new proposal scheduled for debate on Tuesday.
The motion, introduced by MP Dr Ali Al Nuaimi, seeks to have housing allowances disbursed from the date of marriage rather than after the existing five‑year waiting period that begins when an application is submitted.
“This is about giving newlyweds the support they need at the start of their family life,” Dr Al Nuaimi said. “Rising living costs and high real estate prices make it difficult for young couples to secure stable housing. This proposal aims to relieve that pressure immediately, rather than leaving families waiting for years.”
The public utilities and environment affairs committee, after reviewing the proposal and hearing from the Housing and Urban Planning Ministry, recommended its approval unanimously.
The committee highlighted that early disbursement of the allowance would protect family stability and align with the government’s 2023-2026 Action Plan priorities, which aim to improve citizens’ standard of living.

The ministry, however, expressed concerns that implementing the change could impact its current plans to prioritise housing services efficiently.
The ministry currently disburses housing allowances to applicants five years after submission, except for divorced or widowed women, who receive it immediately based on financial need.
Dr Al Nuaimi emphasised that the proposal is not just about financial support, but about fostering social stability.
“Supporting couples at the start of their marriage ensures they can focus on building a family without being weighed down by housing uncertainties. This is a step toward fairer access to housing and stronger families across Bahrain,” he said.
“This is also a practical and compassionate step that addresses the real challenges young Bahrainis face today,” Dr Al Nuaimi added.
