An expatriate food delivery worker who suffered severe injuries in a road accident has been repatriated to India following successful intervention by the Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC)-Bahrain Chapter.
Indian national Yoonus Painatil, 52, travelled back to his hometown in Malappuram, Kerala, yesterday, where he will now receive full-time care from his wife, four children and mother.
Mr Painatil, the sole breadwinner of his family, sustained serious injuries after a car collided head-on with his two‑wheeler near LuLu Hypermarket in Juffair while he was on duty.
Reports indicate that the car was driven by an individual without a valid licence, who allegedly fled the scene without providing assistance.
Three bystanders who witnessed the crash immediately alerted emergency services, and Mr Painatil was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Department at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC).
He underwent four major surgeries, followed by another procedure to insert a steel implant, after suffering a disc fracture and multiple leg injuries.
Despite extensive treatment, he currently faces severe mobility limitations and is unable to walk or sit without support.
The PLC-Bahrain Chapter co-ordinated his medical follow-up, documentation and travel arrangements, ensuring his safe return home to continue recovery with his family.
“Yoonus requires continued medical treatment, and with no one available to care for him here, it was best for him to return home,” PLC Global PRO and Bahrain Chapter president Sudheer Thirunilath told the GDN.
“We learned about his case during a visit by our hospital outreach team to SMC, after which we decided to step in and assist him.
“In many cases, we find that workers are unaware of the required procedures and documentation. That’s where our team comes in – to guide them. We remain committed to safeguarding the rights of expatriate workers and ensuring justice through lawful, structured intervention.”
A legal case has been filed against the accused driver, with the next court hearing scheduled for March 10.
