Eight individuals – whose ages and nationalities were not disclosed by authorities – have been remanded in custody for allegedly possessing expired foodstuffs and engaging in their distribution and sale after altering and falsifying the expiry dates.
The Public Prosecution announced that investigations into the incident are underway, and that the company’s warehouse, along with several of its affiliated retail outlets, has been seized as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The Public Prosecution received a report from the Northern Hamad Town Police Station regarding the individuals involved. The report was based on information provided by an Asian national, who indicated that the company was storing expired foodstuffs in its warehouse located in Hamala.
The informant claimed that expiry dates on the products were being altered and the items were being repackaged in preparation for their distribution through the company’s affiliated retail outlets.
Authorised judicial officers from the Industry and Commerce Ministry and the Health Ministry immediately proceeded to the warehouse, where they seized the expired food items.
The Public Prosecution launched an investigation, inspected the warehouse, and questioned the eight defendants before placing them in provisional detention.
Officials from the Industry and Commerce Ministry initiated the necessary measures to seize any similar products circulating in the markets.
Investigations remain ongoing as preparations are made to refer the defendants to the Criminal Courts for trial.
