MPS have called for the establishment of a national stadium in Muharraq governorate to support local leagues and empower young talent.
The proposal, submitted by Strategic Thinking Bloc spokesman MP Khalid Bu Onk, services committee vice-chairman MP Abdulwahid Qarata and MP Hisham Al Awadhi, aims to enhance Bahrain’s sports infrastructure and achieve fair geographical distribution of major facilities across the kingdom.
Parliament’s services committee recommended approval of the proposal, citing compelling public interest considerations, including strengthening club-level performances and activating sports tourism.
Mr Bu Onk said Muharraq, despite its rich sporting heritage, lacks a major national stadium that reflects its status.
“Muharraq has always been a cradle of Bahraini sports and home to leading clubs and talented athletes,” he said.
“It is only fair that the governorate is equipped with a national stadium capable of hosting major domestic and international events. This is about recognising Muharraq’s historic role and investing in its future.”
Mr Al Awadhi stressed the economic dimension of the proposal, noting that sports infrastructure can serve as a catalyst for tourism and investment.
“A national stadium in Muharraq would open the door to hosting regional and international tournaments, which in turn would stimulate sports tourism and benefit the local economy,” he said. “Major sporting events attract visitors, create commercial activity and showcase Bahrain’s organisational capabilities.”
The Youth Affairs Ministry, in its response, expressed appreciation for the objectives of the proposal and Parliament’s interest in advancing sports. However, it indicated that it does not have jurisdiction to implement projects of this nature.
Mr Qarata added that investing in sports infrastructure is also an investment in youth development and social cohesion.
“Sport plays a vital role in promoting healthy lifestyles, discipline and national pride,” Mr Qarata said. “A modern stadium would serve as a platform for nurturing talent and strengthening community engagement.”
The proposal is scheduled to be debated and voted on during Tuesday’s parliamentary session.
Muharraq is the home of the region’s oldest club – Muharraq Club – established in 1928.
