A proposal calling for a comprehensive plan to upgrade and expand street lighting across Muharraq has been approved by the Muharraq Municipal Council.
It follows concerns raised by councillors over road safety, pedestrian security and the quality of life in residential neighbourhoods.
Constituency two (Old Muharraq) councillor Dalal Al Meghawi has urged swift action to install lighting poles along Road 607 in Block 206, an area she claims has been ‘poorly lit for years’.
Ms Al Meghawi said poor lighting has created daily risks for residents, especially at night, while heading to mosques or returning home.
“Poor visibility increases the risk of accidents, falls and even crime. Adequate lighting is a basic public safety requirement,” she said.
She stressed that the request follows repeated complaints from residents and site visits that confirmed the severity of the problem.
“We submitted an official request through the relevant government channels, but the lack of response prompted us to raise the issue again at the council level,” Ms Al Meghawi added. “Our aim is to ensure this road is prioritised as soon as possible.”
While supporting the proposal, councillors called for a broader and more strategic approach that goes beyond a single street.
“This road is used daily by families, elderly residents and children,” Ms Al Meghawi said. “The unanimous approval sends a strong message that public safety comes first.”
She added that the council’s move reflects a wider push to improve infrastructure in Muharraq and respond more swiftly to community needs.
The council’s financial, administrative and legislative committee chairman councillor Fadhel Al Oud said Muharraq requires a comprehensive lighting plan covering all districts.
“We agree with the importance of addressing Road 607, but we also believe this should be the starting point for a governorate-wide assessment,” he said. “There are other dark spots in Muharraq that need similar attention. A holistic plan will ensure fairness, efficiency and long-term sustainability.”
Mr Al Oud noted that improved lighting contributes not only to safety but also to the overall urban landscape.
“Well-lit streets enhance the city’s appearance, encourage evening activity and support local businesses. This is about making Muharraq brighter, safer and more attractive for everyone,” he added.
The proposal was also endorsed by the services and public utilities committee, chaired by councillor Abdulqader Al Sayed, who described lighting as a cornerstone of essential municipal services.
“Street lighting directly impacts road safety, pedestrian movement and community security,” Mr Al Sayed said. “Our committee fully supports fast-tracking such requests, especially when they are backed by clear justifications and documented evidence.”
He confirmed that photos and technical details related to Road 607 have been attached to the recommendation, and that the council has asked the Municipalities and Agriculture Ministry to co-ordinate with the Electricity and Water Authority to implement the project.
Residents of Block 206 welcomed the council’s decision in a letter addressed to Ms Al Meghawi.
