If you’re anything like me, your weekends are a frantic juggle between the ‘big shop,’ social obligations and finding somewhere for the little ones to blow off steam that doesn’t involve a screen.
This week, I’ve found just the ticket. Tucked away in the Mahooz district, Abu Asheerah Garden is a lovely quiet spot to enjoy some downtime.
This park isn’t the sprawling, flashy affair of some of Bahrain’s newer developments, but that is precisely its charm.
It’s intimate, and boasts a sense of calm that’s harder to find than a parking space on a Friday.
Speaking of parking, there’s a tidy little car park right at the entrance, so you won’t be trekking miles with a picnic hamper in tow.
For the fitness fanatics (or those of us attempting a ‘new year, new me’ regime in March), the park features a dedicated 0.5-mile walking track.
It’s a perfect, flat loop (roughly 1,000 steps if you’re counting!), and is shaded by a canopy of mature trees that offer a very welcome respite from the midday sun.
There is also a football and basketball court, so we’ll definitely bring a ball with us the next time we visit.
The real star of the show for the under-10 crowd is the playground. The swings and slides kept my toddler occupied for a solid hour.
The park is a firm favourite with the local community, and it’s easy to see why.
Whether you’re looking for a brisk morning power-walk or a peaceful spot to read while the kids run wild, Abu Asheerah is a proper little gem.
