A proposal to build a model youth empowerment centre in Buhair will be debated by MPs during Tuesday’s weekly Parliament session.
The proposal, submitted by five MPs led by Mohammed Al Rifaie, has received the backing of Parliament’s services committee, chaired by MP Mamdooh Al Saleh.
According to the committee’s report, the planned centre would provide comprehensive support programmes for young people in the area, focusing on leadership development, social engagement, cultural activities and personal growth. It also aims to raise health and psychological awareness among youth, while encouraging them to take part in community initiatives and creative programmes that build confidence and life skills.
However, Youth Affairs Minister Rawan Tawfiqi noted that the Southern Governorate already hosts nine youth empowerment centres, including facilities in Buhair, Isa Town, East Riffa, Zayed Town, Zallaq, Safra, Central, Southern and the Askar Sports Complex.
She added that the ministry is currently reviewing the status of its properties in preparation for a number of construction projects, including studying the possibility of establishing a new headquarters for the Buhair Youth Empowerment Centre on government-owned land, subject to budget approvals.
Meanwhile, MP Muneer Suroor has also called on the government to establish a youth empowerment centre in Janabiya.
However, Ms Al Tawfiqi said the ministry already operates 15 youth centres across the Northern Governorate, with priority currently focused on strengthening and developing the existing facilities.
