A call has gone out to establish a new public park in Khalifa Town, with MPs stressing the need to expand green spaces in the residential area.
The proposal, submitted by five legislators led by Lulwa Al Romaihi, calls for the creation of a public park in Constituency 10 of the Southern Governorate to serve residents of Khalifa Town and surrounding areas.
Parliament’s public utilities and environment affairs committee has recommended approval of the proposal after reviewing the project and the responses of relevant authorities.
Ms Al Romaihi said the initiative reflects growing demand for recreational spaces in the city.
“Khalifa Town and the neighbouring areas are rapidly expanding residential communities, yet residents still lack sufficient green spaces and recreational facilities,” she said.
“This proposal aims to provide families with a proper public park that serves as a community hub, enhances the city’s attractiveness and improves the living environment for residents.”
According to the proposal, increasing green areas is also consistent with Bahrain’s long-term environmental strategy and supports national efforts to combat desertification and reduce climate-related pollution, while contributing to the Kingdom’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
The Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry confirmed that preliminary work on the project has already begun.
Minister Wael Al Mubarak said the ministry has started preparing detailed designs for a model park in Khalifa City, located in Block 957, covering an area of 1,844 square metres.
The project is expected to begin implementation in the second half of 2026.
The park will feature green spaces, lighting columns, family seating areas and pedestrian pathways connecting the different sections of the park.
In addition, the development will include a mosque, a community majlis and commercial outlets to serve residents, creating what the minister described as a vibrant community centre integrated within the park’s design.
“The project aims to provide a modern and attractive public space that supports social interaction, recreation and community life,” he added.
The proposal has also received support from the Southern Municipal Council.
Council chairman Abdulla Abdullatif said public parks play a vital role in supporting urban development and community wellbeing.
“Public parks are essential spaces that strengthen social ties among residents and encourage healthy lifestyles through sports and outdoor activities,” he added.
MPs are set to discuss the proposal on Tuesday.
